Gidon Kremer recently published this open letter in response to the Verbier Festival’s announcement that he had withdrawn from the Festival due to illness. German text with a rough English translation via Google below. I couldn’t agree with Kremer more, and I’m so glad that someone has finally said this publicly. Hopefully this harks the beginning of the end of the classical-performer-as-dancing-bear phenomenon that is the vast majority of what is offered these days?

Gidon Kremer

Via Google Translate:

You surely remember the famous line from Mark Twain to his publisher: “The rumors of my death is greatly exaggerated.”

I would also quote the great Slava Rostropovich, who knew that the only justification might be for a trip abroad with his wife to Soviet times, a “stable state of health”. Rather than play this card, but he used the following formula to get an exit visa for his wife: “Dear comrades, I feel very comfortable and have no health problems, I ask you for permission to me that my wife, The singer Galina Vishnevskaya, to accompany my next concert tour may. ”

Once your website has published a questionable statement of the Verbier Festival, that my refusal was carried out “health reasons”, I have received numerous e-mails from known and unknown friends, who all provide for my welfare.

My present intention is to use your site to convince all interested parties from the fact that I’m doing very well. “Tired” is his, not really sick. It is actually the exact opposite: Fatigue can be an extension of a healthy state to be considered. Therefore, I am sorry to contradict those who try to make me look sick.

Dear friends and music lovers,
to me it’s still very good. More than that - I hope I have for some time will be with you. I’m sorry if this claim looks like a provocation. There are many artists who are “well behaved”, which imposed on them following the “rules” to be “successful”. Some of these artists are (to me) obvious victims of today’s music industry.

As a musician with a certain degree of knowledge I decline to participate in the Verbier Festival. Lately, I’m somewhat surprised (and therefore lose a little sympathy) from a few artists who can not resist the temptation of her talent for a “symbolic” recognition in the sky of the “stars” in exchange.

I myself want to at least distance themselves from the hype surrounding the “eventful meetings.” My goal was and has been for decades, to serve the music and the composer. Organizers, managers, and to please the masses is another matter.

My letter to the organizers of the prestigious Verbier Festival says it all clearly. I would like today with the letter to her only once on the true “sickness”, which (and this is not always “visible”) to make very widespread attention.

We all need to pay attention to the danger that surrounds young talents today. They are quick to sacrifice and success of advertising, especially if the latter sets in all too quickly. There is a certain tendency to keep on the lookout for brilliant instrumentalists, and seeing them as “personalities” (which they often are not).

Why?

Because many of them are able to manage difficult scores with ease, but “say” here have little. Thankfully, there are those who penetrate into the depths of music. To become a real artist to cultivate his talent and find his own way in life and music, it takes TIME and EFFORT.

Apparently are the music market and its “rules” of promoting rapid growth in this creative ways. Therefore, many young artists a victim of success, which is a real obstacle for them to discover themselves.

All those, for whom music is more than just a means of self-expression or entertainment should be reminded of their deep meaning. The idolatrous worship of pictorial search of names and we should not blind or deaf - the music history (supported by many sound recordings) should remind us what true gems and therefore does not allow us to accept artificial imitations.

To put it in the words of Friedrich Nietzsche: “A life without music would be a misunderstanding.” No doubt - the great thinkers spoke mainly on the music and not be met by the today’s sky, the “rising stars” is filled with lots and an emphasis on entertainment and ovations that have unfortunately become part of our culture. Since I came to this conclusion, allow me to feel stronger and healthier …

I do not expect my position will be welcomed by all, but I am sure that his main message is not related with the “health reasons” that the Verbier Festival put forward as an excuse, as it announced my refusal.

Nevertheless, I wish all the guests and musicians this festival that they enjoy the shows this summer, which undoubtedly will as always be “great” and cheered.

I’m sorry that I will not go with some of my best friends in July on the stage. With yesterday’s completion of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, which I carried out this year for the thirtieth and last time as artistic director, but I had the opportunity to convince me again - and that among the artists and the audience - how many people feel the real music as an energy source to us all (far from the “Star-hype”) presents.

This music we all love - and not the “event culture” - will continue to retain its value and give us the necessary support in his life.

After ignoring the hacked-ness of my website for the better part of the last year or so, apparently it has now been un-hacked.

What???

I wandered back here this evening hoping to be able to find a cached reference to a link I posted a few years ago, and TA-DAH — all of my content is back by some magically wondrous workings of the internet. Color me confused, but I’m not complaining.

Since this is back up and running, no time like the present to plug my new main musical squeeze, the Delphi Trio (www.thedelphitrio.com). We are amazing! And brilliant! And above all, modest…

Seriously, though, I would absolutely love it if any and all of you who happen to read this would just take a step over to our website and have a listen. We met in my last term in the San Francisco Conservatory’s Chamber Music Masters program, and after a couple years of working together, I feel like I’m just starting to understand the potential of this ensemble. It is very, very exciting. I’ll do my best to link the Trio page up with this page a little more thoroughly, as well as cross-post upcoming concert dates and other items of interest.

Otherwise, life progresses in its own crazy rhythm. I am still living in the Bay Area — I don’t think I could go back to a long-term commitment to snow again. I’m making ends meet with five different orchestra jobs while trying to get Delphi off the ground, so I spend a lot of my time running up and down the Peninsula. I’ve gotten much more into the recording and non-classical side of things with the Magik*Magik Orchestra (www.magikmagik.com). I’ve been with this group since the beginning, and they have just skyrocketed — we started out three years ago with a sold-out concert at Herbst Theater, and have since played with some of the biggest names of rock (Sting, Chicago, Fifth Dimension, Third Eye Blind, members of the Manhattans, the Supremes, etc) and recorded on an album that debuted on the Billboard charts at #3 this past June (Codes and Keys by Death Cab for Cutie).

I say this all the time in my day-to-day life, and I truly believe it — I can’t believe how lucky I am to do this for a living.

So, I promised, and here it is! The first installment of my new ongoing project — my first completed composition ever, excluding theory class — and what a task it was. Completed in just under 24 hours after spending several days learning the basics of several somewhat complicated audio programs, I have to say — it’s pretty cheesy… but I kind of like it. I would say it’s not exactly finished right now, but I’ve learned a lot doing it, and I’ve also learned a lot about how much I don’t know! The tune kind of goes somewhere between East Coast ish fiddle and Hungarian or even Klezmer style… kind of weird. I’m not entirely convinced by the way the intro comes off in the final recording, I think it needs either work or a different connection to the main tune, so I’ve included versions both with and without it.

Anyway, all the files are in MP3 format. If you experience any trouble listening to them, please let me know.

Drop me a comment and tell me what you think! Stay tuned for next Friday’s adventure…

Hello there dahlings,

As of today, the blog section of this website is taking a new direction. Basically the idea is this: every Friday from here on, I am going to post an original audio file here. Sometimes it will be violin. Sometimes it won’t. Sometimes it will be cheesy. Sometimes it will be something completely different. Sometimes it will suck. Sometimes it’ll be great.

Basically what I need from you, dear readers, is comments. Let me know someone’s tuned in. Give me encouragement. Give me criticisms. Let me know how cool or uncool I am. Tell me how I have inspired or crushed you. Or, just tell me where the party is.

See you on Friday!

-Liana
